Doctor Robert Baran was born in Paris, France and qualified in dermatology at Hôpital Saint Louis. Currently, he is a clinical investigator for several pharmaceutical companies, Head of the Nail Disease Center in Cannes, France, and Consultant Dermatologist to the Gustave Roussy Cancer Institute in Villejuif, France.

He is a full member or a corresponding member of several dermatological societies and serves on the editorial board of a number of dermatogical journals. Doctor Baran has contributed over 450 papers to the dermatological literature, in addition to serving as an editor or contributor to several books on nails, the hair, and scalp.
